Thallus continuous or rimose, yellowish grey to greenish grey, epruinose, visible only at margins, otherwise dissolving into soredia. Soredia granular, yellowish green to yellowish grey; discrete soralia not forming, but almost the entire thallus becoming sorediate with age. Prothallus not visible or whitish grey. Apothecia sessile, 0.5–1.4 mm diam.; disc red-brown to orange-brown, epruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thin, rough, entire to verruculose, often dissolving into soredia. Cortex hyaline, inspersed with small crystals, 10–25 µm thick laterally and basally. Amphithecium with large crystals insoluble in KOH (pulicaris-type). Parathecium hyaline, 15 µm thick, with crystals. Epihymenium dark brown, with crystals (chlarotera-type); pigmentation soluble in KOH. Hymenium and subhymenium hyaline. Hypothecium yellowish. Paraphyses sparingly branched and thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal to broadly ellipsoidal, 11.0–15.5 × 8.5–10.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C+ orange, Pd+ orange; containing arthothelin (major), pannarin (major), usnic acid (submajor), asemone (minor), atranorin (minor), chloroatranorin (trace) and traces of unidentified terpenes. | ||
